New Friendships

It's been said that a 'stranger' is a friend that you haven't met yet !  Nothing could be more true when entering a hall full of 'strangers' for the first time.  Especially a hall full of Square Dancers who are eager to meet you & will surely welcome you with a Smile and a handshake !  Why not drop by and see how many new friends you can make in a single evening ?

Healthy Exercise

Tired of sitting around watching TV & wondering what to do next?  Want to learn something new that's not only good healthy exercise, but a whole lot of FUN while you're doing it!  It's not only good exercise for the body, but also the mind as you have to listen to the caller while dancing!

Recent medical studies have identified "dancing" as a great way to keep the mind sharp and the body in a fit & healthy state and thus delay the affects of the aging process regardless of your current age.  In an article published recently in the Ottawa Citizen (13/11/06) on 'Why a waltz a day can keep the doctor away', a doctor from the Northwestern University School of Medicine said "This (waltzing) may be more a more effective way of getting people to exercise & may be more fun than running on a treadmill.  Maybe we should try that here (USA) -  I'm not sure we can get Americans to waltz, but they can certainly dance"  And further along in the article - "Part of the benefit may be that dancers had a partner & social companion rather than cycling or walking on a treadmill alone, doctors said..  This type of program is more effective, because it is fun"

Well SQUARE DANCING is the exact recipe to provide those benefits!  Not only the exercise aspect, but the mental as well, as you have to keep your mind focused on what the caller is saying and move in time with the music. Thus you're keeping both your body & mind actively involved throughout the dance.  Now, if you dance the "whole" evening (usually about 2.5 hrs), then you will travel about 5 miles (8km) on the dance floor.  Sometimes referred to as "low impact aerobics", you not only get the full  health benefits, but have FUN during the process!  What's better than that?

SO why not give Square Dancing a try ! You'll be moving, thinking, smiling, laughing & having a good time...... what better form of "exercise" could you possible have ?

New Horizons too!

And.... if you're looking for new places to visit .... here.... or not far.... or perhaps another province or even another country?  Square Dancing can do all that for you.  All you have to do is 'join in' and you'll be visiting & dancing in other parts of the Ottawa area, or for that matter throughout Ontario.  How about going with another group of dancers to the Canadian National Square Dance convention held every 2 years.. somewhere in Canada?   2004 took us to Calgary; 2006 to Montreal & then to London, Ont. in 2008 & Halifax in 2010.  AND..... did you know that  you can Square Dance anywhere in the world because the moves are the same everywhere & the calls are all in English no matter where you are !  So your fun is unlimited !

YES, IT'S A FUN ACTIVITY !!

If you haven't figured it out yet, YES, the focal point of Square Dancing is to have FUN !  To enjoy the dancing, the new friends, learning the new dance steps while having a great time doing it all !  Each fall at the Town & Kountry Kickers, we start teaching a 'new' group of dancers the various square dance moves & have you dancing the very first night & meeting new friends & enjoying the fun of the dance!  Geoff Clarke is our Caller  and you'll often hear him tell the newer dancers "You're here to have FUN & if you're really lucky, you'll also learn to Square Dance!".  Our club motto says that "A Smile on your face makes your feet work better".

So COME & JOIN US and have Fun!

We teach 'new' dancers starting in Sept. each year, so why not give it a try ?
